Long Island schools educate over 500,000 students in their public, private and parochial schools each and every year. The 230 private schools employ roughly 5,000 teachers for their 53,000 students; the 127 public school districts employ about 36,000 teachers for the 476,000 enrolled students.

The Public School Systems spends between $15,000 and $17,000 per student depending on the area. There has long been a debate about whether or not spending more per student or school will automatically result in a better education and higher test scores. There are statistics that seem to support both sides. So the debate goes on.

Approximately 80+% of students go on to higher education. Long Island offers many opportunities for its students. They can choose from seventeen different four year colleges and universities - eight two/three year junior colleges, and five professional institutions. Some notable schools are: Dowling College, Molloy College, New York Institute of Technology, Stony Brook University, Long Island University, New York College of Health Professions, St. Joseph’s College, Webb Institute, Suffolk County Community College and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
